President Donald Trump criticized Bill Maher in a nearly 500-word post on Truth Social Saturday, calling the HBO host and comedian a “jerk” and accusing him of over-the-top criticism of Trump and the political left.
Trump recounted a spring 2025 dinner at the White House with Maher, dismissing it as “a total waste of time.” He said Maher appeared nervous during the meeting and ordered a vodka tonic shortly after arriving. “He was extremely nervous, had ZERO confidence in himself,” Trump wrote, noting that Maher initially behaved respectfully after the dinner but quickly returned to anti-Trump commentary on his show.
The president listed numerous achievements from his first and second terms, including border security, economic milestones such as record-high Dow and S&P figures, low inflation, reduced crime, and military successes, saying Maher failed to acknowledge these accomplishments.
Trump also criticized Maher for responding to a Friday Truth Social post in which Trump joked about Canada and China. “Well, he went on and on about the Hockey statement, like ‘What kind of a person would say such a foolish thing,’ as though I were being serious,” Trump wrote, calling the show’s ratings low and comparing Maher to other late-night hosts.
The president said Maher had previously asked to return to the White House and attend its Christmas party, but Trump declined, stating he would rather focus on “making America great again.” He concluded his post with a variation of his social media sign-off, thanking followers for their attention.
Maher, who generally votes Democratic and supported Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024, has frequently criticized Trump and his supporters on television. Both the White House and Maher’s team did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
