The Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Cleveland Guardians 3-1 on Sunday, October 18, winning Game 5 of the American League Championship Series and taking a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven matchup. The Rays can clinch the American League pennant with a victory in Game 6 at home on Monday.
Tampa Bay established control early, scoring one run in each of the first three innings. Yandy Díaz scored on a bases-loaded walk to Jonny DeLuca in the first inning, Jonathan Aranda delivered an RBI single in the second, and Liam Hicks added another RBI single in the third to give the Rays a 3-0 advantage.
The early lead gave Rasmussen room to dominate on the mound. The right-hander allowed just one run on four hits over seven innings, walked one batter and struck out six. He retired nine consecutive Guardians after allowing a hit in the first inning and kept Cleveland's offense largely quiet until the seventh.
Cleveland finally broke through in the seventh when Chase DeLauter hit an RBI single to score a run, cutting the deficit to 3-1. The Guardians threatened again, but Tampa Bay's pitching and defense prevented them from closing the gap.
Yandy Díaz finished with three hits, while Aranda and Hicks each collected two hits and drove in a run. Cleveland managed only five hits in the game, with Steven Kwan accounting for two of them.
The Rays' bullpen protected the lead over the final two innings, and Bryan Baker recorded the save in the ninth to seal the victory.
With the series now tilted in Tampa Bay's favor, the Rays return home knowing one more win would send them to the World Series. Game 6 is scheduled for Monday night at Tropicana Field, where Tampa Bay will have the opportunity to secure its third American League pennant and first since 2020.
