Richard Riehle, the character actor best known for his role as the beleaguered product manager Tom Smykowski in the 1999 comedy "Office Space," died Thursday of natural causes in Los Angeles. He was 78.
Riehle's representatives confirmed the death Monday and issued a statement highlighting his nearly five-decade career across theater, film, and television in more than 400 projects. "A remarkable actor whose career in theater, film, and television spanned nearly five decades and more than 400 projects, Richard leaves behind an extraordinary legacy," the statement read. "Beyond his immense talent, he will be remembered for his genuine goodness, boundless kindness, and unwavering generosity, particularly toward emerging actors and filmmakers."
Born May 12, 1948, in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin, Riehle attended the University of Notre Dame and earned a master of fine arts degree from the University of Minnesota. He began his screen career in the 1970s with small roles, including an uncredited part in the John Wayne film "Rooster Cogburn," and built a steady presence as a supporting player known for his bushy mustache and everyman demeanor.
His breakout film role came in "Office Space," where he portrayed the anxious employee who survives a hit-and-run and dreams of launching a "Jump to Conclusions" mat. Other notable film credits include appearances in "The Fugitive," "Casino," "Bridesmaids," "Of Mice and Men," and "Wedding Crashers." On television, he played recurring characters on "Grounded for Life" and guest spots on series such as "The West Wing," "Star Trek: Enterprise," and "Barry."
Riehle is survived by his wife, Jane Latham, and their four children. Tributes from colleagues, including former "Grounded for Life" co-star Donal Logue, praised his professionalism and warmth on set.
News of the death emerged Monday evening as reports from multiple outlets confirmed details from his representatives and associates.
