Russia's Defense Ministry announced early Sunday that its air defense forces destroyed 170 Ukrainian aircraft-type unmanned aerial vehicles over various parts of the country overnight.
The attacks occurred between 9:00 p.m. Moscow time on March 14 and 7:00 a.m. on March 15. Drones were downed over the Tver, Bryansk, Belgorod, Kaluga, Kursk, Smolensk, Tula, Rostov, Volgograd, and Saratov regions, as well as Krasnodar Krai, the Republic of Adygea, Crimea, the Black Sea area, and the Moscow Region. Among them, 20 drones targeted the Moscow area, where authorities described it as the largest drone attack on the capital this year, with 65 intercepted in less than 12 hours.
No casualties were reported from the incident. However, one drone struck an apartment building in the Soviet district of Volgograd, damaging windows in several apartments. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin confirmed that air defenses neutralized all drones approaching the capital without significant damage.
The barrage marks one of the largest Ukrainian drone offensives against Russian territory in recent weeks. Similar incidents have intensified, with Russia reporting 176 drones downed on March 12-13 and 234 over nine hours on March 8. Ukrainian officials have not commented on the specific launch, consistent with their policy on long-range strikes.
This Ukrainian operation follows a major Russian aerial assault on Ukraine overnight into Saturday, where Moscow launched around 430 drones and 68 missiles, killing at least six people across several regions including Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy highlighted the strikes on Sumy, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Mykolaiv, and other areas.
The mutual drone and missile exchanges underscore the escalating role of unmanned systems in the conflict now entering its fourth year. Both sides have ramped up production and deployment of drones, targeting infrastructure, military sites, and population centers deep behind front lines.
Russian forces have repeatedly claimed high interception rates, attributing success to improved electronic warfare and air defense networks. Ukraine, meanwhile, has struck oil refineries, ports, and airfields in recent days, such as the Afipsky Oil Refinery and Kavkaz port in Krasnodar Krai on March 13-14.
The incident occurs amid stalled peace talks and ongoing ground fighting in eastern Ukraine, particularly around Donetsk where Russian advances continue slowly.
