Russia launched a barrage of ballistic missiles at Kyiv overnight, striking the Ukrainian capital just hours after President Vladimir Putin agreed in principle to resume U.S.-mediated peace talks with Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported three waves of 21 ballistic missiles targeting the city, none of which were intercepted. The strikes damaged residential buildings, energy infrastructure, a railway station, the metro system, shopping centers, and a historic monastery in the Pecherskyi district. Three missiles reportedly carried cluster warheads.
At least two people were killed and between 22 and 34 others injured in Kyiv and surrounding areas, including several children, according to Ukrainian officials. The attacks hit 12 regions across Ukraine.
The strikes followed a Wednesday meeting in St. Petersburg between Putin and U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff. Putin indicated willingness to restart trilateral negotiations involving the United States, Russia, and Ukraine as early as November. Witkoff praised Putin as a “humanitarian” after Russia released a detained American citizen.
President Donald Trump stated afterward that the war may be closer to ending than ever before. Ukraine responded by launching hundreds of drones toward Moscow, with Russian air defenses claiming to have intercepted most of them.
Zelenskyy described the attack as a “demonstrative” strike intended to inflict maximum civilian harm and said it revealed no change in Russia’s approach. The exchange occurred amid ongoing U.S. diplomatic efforts to broker an end to the conflict.
