Russian ballistic missiles struck Kyiv overnight, killing two people and injuring dozens across Ukraine as Ukrainian forces launched hundreds of drones toward Moscow. The strikes occurred just hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed in principle to resume three-way negotiations with Ukraine and the United States.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia fired 21 ballistic missiles at the capital in three waves, including some carrying cluster munitions. The attacks damaged apartment buildings, energy facilities, a railway station, the metro system, shopping centers, and other sites. One person died in Kyiv, with additional casualties reported in other regions, bringing the total killed in Ukraine to at least four, officials said. Thirty-four people were injured, including five children.
Ukraine reported launching 630 drones toward Moscow. Russian air defenses intercepted most of them, with Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stating that 163 approached the city directly. Two people were wounded near Moscow, and one man was killed in the Belgorod region by Ukrainian drones, according to local officials. Russia's Defense Ministry reported downing 808 drones across multiple regions.
The exchanges took place despite recent diplomatic efforts. Putin hosted U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff in St. Petersburg on Wednesday, after which Russia indicated readiness to resume talks next month. Zelenskyy criticized the timing of the Russian strikes, posting on social media that they came from Russian "humanitarians."
Both sides have continued targeting infrastructure and military assets amid the broader conflict. The latest barrage damaged power facilities in Ukraine, raising concerns ahead of the winter heating season. Russian officials have accused Ukraine of attempting to disrupt recent parliamentary elections with prior drone waves.
Casualty figures and damage assessments continue to be updated by authorities in both countries.
