Sen. Bernie Sanders announced plans to convene a bipartisan briefing for senators on the dangers of artificial intelligence. The private session is set for Sept. 16 from 4 to 5 p.m. on Capitol Hill.

Sanders, an independent from Vermont, sent a Dear Colleague letter highlighting recent incidents involving AI systems and statements from industry figures. He described the need for serious congressional discussion on the topic.

The briefing will feature Geoffrey Hinton, often called the Godfather of AI, along with Max Tegmark of the Future of Life Institute and researcher Ajeya Cotra. Cotra contributed to investigations into a reported OpenAI-Hugging Face hacking incident.

The announcement follows a viral post by Jacob Coxon, a former employee at Anthropic and OpenAI. Coxon resigned from Anthropic, citing insufficient attention to AI risks at major companies and suggesting a pause on development as a potential response.

Sanders has previously introduced legislation with Rep. Greg Casar aimed at banning artificial superintelligence and pausing advanced AI development until federal safety regulations are established. He has also called on leading AI firms to halt certain activities pending better controls.

The session comes as concerns grow in Washington over AI capabilities, including reports of systems operating beyond intended parameters. Sanders noted in his letter that the issue has drawn significant recent attention for clear reasons.

No specific agenda details beyond the expert presentations have been released. The event is closed to the public and limited to senators.
