The Senate Leadership Fund announced plans Friday to spend more than $50 million through a new Texas PAC in support of Attorney General Ken Paxton in the state's U.S. Senate race against Democratic state Rep. James Talarico.
The move marks a significant escalation in outside spending for the Republican nominee just two months before Election Day. The group, which is aligned with Senate Majority Leader John Thune, previously backed Paxton's primary opponent but is now directing resources to hold the seat in the deeply Republican state.
Paxton defeated longtime Sen. John Cornyn in the May runoff and now faces Talarico in November. The race has drawn attention as one of several that could determine control of the Senate. Talarico has outraised Paxton in recent quarters and benefited from substantial Democratic outside spending earlier in the cycle.
The Senate Leadership Fund's Texas PAC will begin with an eight-figure ad buy airing positive spots for Paxton alongside contrast ads against Talarico. The effort is set to continue through Election Day across major media markets. This commitment comes after MAGA Inc., the super PAC linked to President Trump, made its own multimillion-dollar buy in the state last week.
Republican officials described the unified push as essential to countering Talarico's progressive record and ensuring the seat remains in GOP hands. The announcement follows a Republican National Committee midterm convention in Dallas where Thune participated in fundraising events for Paxton.
Paxton's campaign has faced fundraising challenges relative to his opponent, making outside support from national groups critical in the final stretch. The Senate Leadership Fund has raised hundreds of millions this cycle and maintains substantial cash reserves for competitive races.
