Ukraine's military has regained full use of Starlink and Starshield satellite links for its drones and frontline operations. The defense ministry announced Saturday that monitoring systems now record stable connections at speeds exceeding 400 kilometers per hour.
The restoration ends restrictions that began around October 14 and limited speeds to roughly 160 kilometers per hour. Those limits disrupted drone intercepts of Russian attacks and forced cancellations of some missions, Ukrainian officials said.
Defense Minister Yevhenii Khmara stated that the recovery is vital for troops, drone operations, logistics, and communications along the front. The ministry credited direct dialogue and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's firm stance for the outcome.
Starlink and its military-grade Starshield variant have served as a critical communications backbone for Ukrainian forces since Russia's 2022 invasion. The systems enable real-time drone control and connectivity in remote battlefield areas where traditional infrastructure is unavailable.
The brief throttling period heightened tensions between Kyiv and Washington. Ukrainian leaders attributed the slowdown to pressure tied to U.S. efforts to broker negotiations and halt Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil infrastructure. U.S. officials and SpaceX maintained that any changes fell under Pentagon oversight rather than direct political intervention.
The service is now operating normally again, allowing Ukrainian forces to resume high-speed drone missions without interruption. Ongoing peace talks between the U.S., Russia, and Ukraine continue alongside localized ceasefires in certain regions.
