In a recently released episode of Real Truth Media's After the Call, Courtney Stodden detailed the grooming and exploitation she endured that resulted in her marrying actor Doug Hutchison at age 16 in 2011, when he was 51.
Stodden competed in beauty pageants as a teenager and pursued youth modeling and music before gaining national attention. She described entering the modeling and pageantry world, and how those organizations she participated in perpetuated grooming behaviors. Minors were "cosplaying how to be a sexualized woman", Stodden said.
She met Hutchison, known for his roles in The Green Mile and The X-Files, through an acting workshop. Stodden recounts their relationship beginning with emails that started innocent but turned flirtatious and inappropriate. She detailed Hutchinson using the same grooming playbook with her as he allegedly used on other underage girls during his time on The X-Files.
Stodden described feeling positioned as the breadwinner shortly after her 2011 wedding to Hutchinson, generating income while lacking emotional support and dissociating. She has recounted the dynamic shifting quickly into one of control and manipulation, including abuse that occurred behind closed doors.
The marriage ended with a divorce finalized in 2020.
She noted that revisiting the events as an adult with a developed brain revealed deeper trauma she had previously suppressed. Stodden has said the experience involved emotional abuse, and she has spoken about helping another young girl escape a similar situation. She labeled child marriage "America's dirty little secret," criticizing legal loopholes that permit minors to wed.
Nationally, nearly 300,000 minors were legally married between 2000 and 2018 across states with varying rules. California was one of three states without a statutory minimum marriage age, allowing unions with parental consent and court approval. Stodden produced and narrated the Lifetime movie "I Was a Child Bride: The Courtney Stodden Story," which premiered in 2025. She has stated that creating the project forced her to confront unresolved pain.
Stodden, now 32, has shared her story and used her experiences to push for the reforms. She emphasized that her experience is not as rare as many may think and that she is fighting to protect others from going through the same thing.
Her advocacy includes work with Unchained at Last on California Assembly Bill 1267, which sets the minimum marriage age at 18 with no exceptions. The bill passed the legislature and was signed into law on September 30, 2026.
