Two men died and around 90,000 properties remained without power Monday morning after Storm Boelo swept across parts of the United Kingdom.
The victims included a 60-year-old man identified as Richard Baines, the curator of Logan Botanic Garden, who was killed by a falling tree near Castle Douglas in Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland. A man in his 20s died when a tree struck his car on Dollis Road in Finchley, north London.
The Energy Networks Association reported that power cuts affected hundreds of thousands of customers over the weekend, with roughly 90,000 still disconnected as of Monday morning. Engineers had restored service to hundreds of thousands more by that point, though ongoing strong winds complicated repairs.
Peak wind gusts reached 85 mph in Machrihanish, Argyll and Bute, with similar speeds recorded elsewhere in Scotland and northern England. The storm followed closely behind Storm Austen, which struck southern and western areas earlier in the week.
Widespread travel disruption included canceled flights, suspended ferry services, closed roads, and delayed trains. Flooding affected coastal communities in Scotland, and several schools closed due to power outages or damage.
The Met Office maintained weather warnings into Monday evening, urging residents to stay indoors and prepare for possible further outages. Officials said clean-up operations were underway across affected regions.
