A suspect was killed after ramming a pickup truck into a synagogue in West Bloomfield, triggering a blaze and a heavy police response, authorities said.
The incident occurred at Temple Israel, one of the largest Reform Jewish congregations in the United States. Officials said the driver smashed through the building’s doors and drove down a hallway before being confronted by security personnel.
Michael Bouchard said synagogue security guards opened fire on the attacker after the vehicle entered the building. Authorities have not yet confirmed the exact cause of the suspect’s death.
“We can’t say what killed him at this point, but security did engage the suspect with gunfire,” Bouchard told reporters.
A member of the synagogue’s security team was injured after being struck by the pickup truck and was taken to a hospital for treatment. Officials said the suspect appeared to have acted alone.
Police deployed bomb-sniffing dogs to examine the vehicle and ensure no explosives were present. Investigators said the response was complicated by a fire caused by the crash, which sent smoke billowing from the building while firefighters worked to control the blaze.
Authorities said a motive has not yet been determined. The incident comes during a period of heightened security across the United States following the recent escalation of the conflict involving the United States, Israel, and Iran.
Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer condemned the attack, saying the state’s Jewish community should be able to live and worship safely.
“Michigan’s Jewish community should be able to live and practice their faith in peace,” Whitmer said, adding that antisemitism and violence have no place in the state.
Karoline Leavitt said President Donald Trump had been briefed on the situation.
In a separate reaction, Gideon Saar said he was “shocked by the attack” and that Israeli officials were in contact with the Jewish community and local authorities.
Law enforcement officials said security around Jewish institutions in the area will be increased while investigators work to determine the circumstances surrounding the attack.
