President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that the United States will impose 50% tariffs on all goods exported to America by any country supplying military weapons to Iran.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump stated, "A Country supplying Military Weapons to Iran will be immediately tariffed, on any and all goods sold to the United States of America, 50%, effective immediately. There will be no exclusions or exemptions!" The measure takes effect right away and applies broadly without exceptions.
The announcement came hours after the U.S. and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire, which Trump described as a "big day for world peace." The truce, mediated by Pakistan, includes provisions for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz and aims to de-escalate recent tensions.
Trump also indicated openness to discussions on sanctions relief and nuclear restrictions. In another post, he said the U.S. would "work closely" with Iran to remove nuclear materials and halt uranium enrichment. These steps follow U.S. demands for Iran to cease weapons production and comply with nuclear limits.
The tariffs target third-party nations that have historically supplied arms to Iran, including Russia, China, and North Korea through their supply chains. No specific countries were named in the post, but the policy could disrupt global trade flows and escalate economic pressure on Tehran's allies.
U.S. stock futures showed little change following the announcement, reflecting market caution amid the fragile ceasefire. Oil prices have fluctuated in recent weeks due to concerns over the Strait of Hormuz, a key chokepoint for global energy shipments.
Tensions between the U.S. and Iran escalated earlier this year with U.S. airstrikes on Iranian targets and threats of further action against infrastructure if demands were unmet. Iran had imposed fees on ships transiting the strait and faced accusations of supporting proxy militias. The ceasefire marks a temporary pause, with Trump emphasizing enforcement of arms restrictions to prevent rearmament.
