Former New York Yankees pitcher Roger Clemens will receive the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Donald Trump, joining a distinguished group of American sports figures who have received the nation’s highest civilian honor.

Clemens learned about the award Wednesday night while introducing Trump at a rally in San Antonio. Trump announced the honor from the stage, telling the crowd, “We’re giving him the Presidential Medal of Freedom.”

Clemens appeared visibly surprised by the announcement.

“Well, I’m stunned, number one,” Clemens told the crowd. “And again, 24 years, y’all. This supersedes anything that, obviously, I’ve done in my playing career. And to get it from this man, this president, there wouldn’t be another president I’d want to get [it] from.”

Clemens played 24 seasons in Major League Baseball, spending six seasons with the Yankees, 13 with the Boston Red Sox, two with the Toronto Blue Jays and two with the Houston Astros.

Known throughout his career as “The Rocket,” Clemens won the American League MVP award in 1986 and captured the pitching Triple Crown twice, in 1997 and 1998. He finished his career with 354 victories, ninth-most in MLB history.

Trump praised Clemens at the rally, calling him “maybe the greatest pitcher of all time.”

Despite his accomplishments, Clemens has not been elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame. His candidacy has been complicated by allegations of performance-enhancing drug use after his name appeared 82 times in the 2007 Mitchell Report. Clemens denied using steroids and never tested positive for a banned substance.

Clemens will now join a long list of baseball legends who have received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, including Babe Ruth, Jackie Robinson, Hank Aaron, Ted Williams, Yogi Berra, Stan Musial, Frank Robinson, Roberto Clemente, Ernie Banks, Joe DiMaggio and Mariano Rivera, along with broadcaster Vin Scully.
