President Donald Trump criticized Norway and the Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday after the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize went to South African jurist Navi Pillay instead of the United States.
Speaking at a campaign rally in Syracuse, New York, Trump described the choice as a disgraceful and embarrassing decision that left an indelible stain on Norway. He said the United States, represented by him as president, should have received the prize.
The committee awarded the prize to Pillay, an 85-year-old former International Criminal Court judge and UN high commissioner for human rights. She chaired a UN commission that concluded Israel committed genocide in Gaza, a finding rejected by the Israeli government.
Trump dismissed the recipient as a mystery person nobody had heard of and labeled her a liberal UN figure. He contrasted her record with his own claims of settling eight wars and preventing conflicts involving North and South Korea, Japan and North Korea, and China and Taiwan.
Trump stated that the Nobel Peace Prize had been forever discredited by a handful of radical ideologues who are anti-democracy and enemies of civilization. He warned that the United States would not forget Norway for the snub.
The president repeated similar complaints in prior years when the prize went to other recipients. Norway's prime minister has previously noted that the Nobel committee operates independently of the government.
Trump framed the award as another sign that countries like Norway are taking advantage of the United States. He said the committee's choice ignored his administration's efforts to resolve international conflicts.
