President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Rep. Ilhan Omar could face jail time in addition to possible deportation amid an ongoing federal investigation into her U.S. citizenship.
"Well, she could be. She could also go to jail," Trump responded when asked about deportation during an Oval Office news conference. "You know, they keep talking about deportation. No, she could go to jail. This is just my opinion."
The comments came one day after reports detailed a federal search of Omar's Washington, D.C., home on Oct. 12. Agents from Homeland Security Investigations seized her passport, cellphone, laptops, notebooks, and other items as part of the probe.
Investigators are examining whether Omar or her late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, misrepresented her age on immigration documents. The focus centers on claims that her birth date was altered to show she was 17 rather than 18 when her father naturalized in 2000, potentially allowing her to derive citizenship as a minor.
Omar arrived in the United States in 1995 from a refugee camp in Kenya after fleeing Somalia. She became a naturalized citizen in 2000. She has maintained that she entered the country at age 12 and obtained citizenship at 17.
Authorities have issued more than a dozen subpoenas to family members, including Omar's sister, seeking testimony before a Minnesota grand jury. The probe also examines the family's broader immigration paperwork from the 1990s.
Possible charges under review include immigration fraud, false statements, and conspiracy, according to people familiar with the matter. The Justice Department has described the home search as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.
Omar, 44, has denied any wrongdoing and called the investigation politically motivated. She faces reelection in Minnesota's 5th District on Nov. 3.
Trump has previously criticized Omar over her immigration history and statements about the United States. The investigation, launched earlier this year by Homeland Security Investigations, represents a renewed examination of allegations that earlier reviews had set aside.
