President Donald J. Trump announced on Truth Social that a significant ecological disaster is unfolding in the Potomac River following a sewer line breach in Maryland. Trump accused Governor Wes Moore and local Democratic officials of incompetence, stating that millions of gallons of raw sewage have entered the river.
In his post, Trump described the incident as a result of “incompetent Local and State Management of Essential Waste Management Systems” and criticized Moore for failing to rebuild a critical bridge, which he said exacerbated the situation. He warned that local authorities “cannot adequately handle this calamity” and emphasized that the Potomac, “the heart of Washington,” is at risk.
Trump directed federal authorities to provide “all necessary Management, Direction, and Coordination” to protect the river, the Capital Region’s water supply, and national resources. He specifically referenced the Palisades area and highlighted FEMA’s role in coordinating the response, asserting that the federal government must intervene because state and local efforts are insufficient.
President Trump framed the intervention as a necessary step to impose accountability and prevent further environmental damage, stating: “I am directing Federal Authorities to immediately provide all necessary Management, Direction, and Coordination to protect the Potomac.” He concluded his statement by thanking the public for its attention to the unfolding situation.
