President Donald Trump told supporters at the Republican midterm convention in Dallas on Wednesday night that he planned to pursue a $5,000 “dividend” for adult U.S. citizens should Republicans win control of both the House and Senate in November.

President Trump pledged during his remarks at the American Airlines Center, where he urged Republicans to treat the upcoming midterm elections as though he himself were on the ballot.

The proposed payment would represent a new federal dividend for eligible adult Americans. The announcement from Trump is new but the idea is not. Earlier proposals from the Trump Administration In 2025 promised a $5,000 “DOGE dividend” as a potential payment funded by a portion of federal spending savings.

Trump has also previously discussed a separate tariff-funded dividend of at least $2,000 per person. That proposal was distinct from the earlier DOGE dividend concept.

The $5,000 payment Trump discussed Wednesday would therefore represent a new version of the dividend concept, but not the president's first time rolling out the idea.

The Republican convention in Dallas is the first national Republican gathering specifically organized around a midterm election cycle. Trump has made the event heavily centered on his administration and the congressional races Republicans will contest in November. The president told the crowd that he planned to campaign across key swing states and urged voters to view the election as a continuation of his agenda.
