President Donald Trump took a shot at the Dallas Mavericks’ decision to trade Luka Dončić to the Los Angeles Lakers during his remarks at the Republican midterm convention Wednesday night.

Trump referenced the February 2025 blockbuster deal while discussing sports and deal-making, suggesting the Mavericks could reconsider the move.

“I would say it will not go down as the greatest trade in the history of sports. Maybe we can redo that trade,” Trump joked.

The mentioned deal saw the Mavericks send Dončić, along with Maxi Kleber and Markieff Morris, to the Lakers in a three-team trade. Dallas received 10-time All-Star Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick in return. The Utah Jazz also participated in the deal.

The trade immediately generated widespread attention because Dončić had become the centerpiece of the Mavericks franchise and had led Dallas to the NBA Finals the previous season. The move was completed during the 2024-25 season and came as a surprise to much of the basketball world.

Mavericks General Manager Nico Harrison defended the decision at the time, pointing to Davis’ ability to contribute on both ends of the court and emphasizing the team's belief that defense was essential to winning championships. Harrison also cited uncertainty surrounding Dončić’s future contract situation as a factor in the decision.

Trump’s comments come more than a year after the trade as he visits the team's hometown of Dallas, where the deal still remains a major topic among Mavericks fans.
