President Donald Trump urged Elon Musk to restore full access to Starlink for Ukraine after restrictions limited the satellite system's speeds and hampered Ukrainian drone operations.

The Wall Street Journal reported Thursday that Trump personally contacted Musk on Wednesday to press for the removal of the caps, which had reduced speeds to around 160 kilometers per hour. The limits rendered some offensive and interceptor drones ineffective against Russian attacks.

Trump told reporters Thursday that Musk had restored the service, stating, "The bottom line, he put it back." He declined to confirm whether he made the call himself.

The restrictions originated last week when Musk ordered the slowdown on the military-grade Starshield variant used by Ukraine. Both Musk and Trump had criticized Ukrainian strikes on Russian oil refineries, which the president linked to rising energy prices.

Ukrainian officials reported improved speeds by Thursday, though some said full functionality had not yet returned. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said earlier in the day that connectivity to the system remained incomplete.

The episode followed days of conflicting accounts over responsibility for the initial throttling. Musk had previously stated that limits on Starshield were decided by the U.S. government, while Trump denied any administration role in the slowdown.

Ukraine relies on Starlink for battlefield communications and drone coordination in its defense against Russia.
