Two people, including a child, were killed and multiple others injured Saturday when a vehicle drove onto a soccer field at the Scheels Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas.

Wichita police said emergency dispatchers began receiving multiple 911 calls around 3:25 p.m. reporting that a truck had driven through the game on Field 4. A child and an adult died at the scene, and several people were transported to area hospitals with injuries of unknown severity.

Capt. Aaron Moses of the Wichita Police Department confirmed the driver remained at the scene and was taken into custody. He said there is no ongoing threat to the public from the driver. Two juveniles were passengers in the vehicle.

The incident occurred on Field 4 at the complex, which features multiple turf fields used for youth sports. Witnesses described a black pickup truck that jumped the curb, did not slow down, and struck people before stopping farther down the pitch. One attendee said the truck "plowed through everybody" and "didn’t stop until it got through the whole field." Another witness reported the vehicle hit multiple people before stopping 100-200 yards down the fields.

The Kansas State High School Activities Association postponed flag football championship games scheduled on an adjacent field. Four Kansas City-area teams had been playing there as part of the association’s inaugural girls flag football state championship event.

Wichita Mayor Lily Wu expressed heartbreak over the incident and urged people to avoid the area. The complex is a major venue for youth sports in the region. All events at the Stryker Sports Complex were canceled until further notice.

Police have not released the names or ages of the victims or the driver. Officials are notifying families, and the investigation continues into how and why the vehicle entered the field.
