The Chicago White Sox defeated the Houston Astros 7-3 Wednesday in Houston to sweep the American League Wild Card Series and advance to the next round of the MLB playoffs. The victory marked Chicago’s first playoff series win since the team swept the Astros in the 2005 World Series.

Chicago wasted little time taking control of the deciding game, scoring four runs in the first inning against Houston starter Hunter Brown. Brown, who had previously dominated the White Sox in his career, was pulled after recording only two outs as the Astros struggled defensively behind him.

The White Sox extended their advantage later in the game behind Chase Meidroth, who delivered a three-run home run in the sixth inning. The blast gave Chicago additional breathing room after Houston had attempted to close the gap.

The win completes a remarkable turnaround for the White Sox. Chicago had lost at least 100 games in each of the previous three seasons before reaching the postseason this year, making the playoff berth itself a major reversal for the franchise. The White Sox are the first team in MLB history to follow consecutive 100-loss seasons with a playoff appearance.

Houston, meanwhile, entered the postseason after finishing 81-81 and winning the American League West. The Astros were unable to extend the series after also falling to Chicago 6-3 in Tuesday’s opener.

The White Sox will now face the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Division Series, with Game 1 scheduled for Saturday in Cleveland.
