A woman who went overboard from a Royal Caribbean cruise ship near the Greek island of Zakynthos was found alive Saturday after spending approximately 20 hours in the water, according to the Hellenic Coast Guard.
The 44-year-old passenger from El Salvador was discovered floating on a bright orange life buoy in the Ionian Sea, roughly 80 miles from shore. The vessel was reportedly Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas, which sails under the flag of the Bahamas.
Footage shared on social media showed rescue personnel throwing a rope to the woman as they worked to bring her to safety. A Hellenic Coast Guard spokesperson confirmed that she had spent about 20 hours at sea.
The woman reportedly told rescuers that she had jumped from the ship because “she wanted to disembark.” Authorities said they were alerted to the incident Friday morning and immediately activated search-and-rescue operations.
The search involved a rescue ship, a patrol boat, a Hellenic Air Force helicopter and other vessels operating in the area. The coordinated effort continued until rescuers located the woman alive on Saturday.
Following her rescue, she received first aid aboard a vessel before being transported to a port near the Greek village of Katakolo. She was then taken by ambulance to the General Hospital of Pyrgos, where medical personnel conducted examinations and monitored her condition.
The rescue brought a dramatic end to an extensive search in open water. Authorities have not provided further details about the circumstances that led the woman to leave the cruise ship or her medical condition following the rescue.
