A devastating fire tore through a horse barn at Orth Ranch near Guthrie, Oklahoma, killing 18 of the 22 horses stabled inside.
The blaze broke out around 4 a.m. on Sunday, May 3, 2026, in Logan County along East Seward Road east of Guthrie. A passerby spotted the flames around 4:10 a.m. and called 911, prompting a rapid response from firefighters. Crews from Guthrie, Woodcrest, and Sooner fire departments arrived to find the structure fully engulfed. No human injuries were reported.
Orth Ranch operates as a performance horse training facility, with the lost animals belonging to both the owners and clients. Four horses survived the inferno, though details on their conditions remain limited.
In a Facebook statement posted Sunday afternoon, the ranch expressed profound grief. "It is with heavy hearts that we share there was a fire at our place," the post read. "We lost several horses, some our own, and some belonging to clients who have become like family to us over the years. For anyone who’s spent time in our industry, you know the extent of the connection and time dedicated to these horses." The owners requested privacy and patience as they process the loss, promising updates when available.
The Oklahoma State Fire Marshal's Office is leading the investigation, having narrowed the fire's origin to a couple of stalls inside the barn. Arson is not suspected, with no signs of break-in, burglary, or other suspicious activity. Investigators have completed initial interviews with owners and plan further inquiries. A full report could take weeks.
Aerial footage showed extensive damage to the barn's thin roof and surrounding ground. The equine community has rallied in support, with a GoFundMe campaign and benefit auction established to aid recovery efforts.
The Logan County Sheriff's Office assisted on scene, initially dispatching units for a possible structure fire. This incident has left a mark on local horse enthusiasts, highlighting the vulnerabilities of rural agricultural operations.
