Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said Sunday that Sen. Mitch McConnell has not responded to his requests for more information about the senator’s health and ability to serve following a hospitalization and lengthy rehabilitation stay.
“I’ve heard absolutely nothing back from Mitch McConnell,” Beshear said during an appearance on CBS News’ Face the Nation.
McConnell, 84, was hospitalized on June 14 and has remained out of the public eye for an extended period. Beshear, a Democrat, had previously sent letters to the Republican senator seeking updates on his medical status.
The governor’s latest comments highlight ongoing questions about McConnell’s fitness to continue serving in the Senate. Beshear noted his long personal acquaintance with McConnell while expressing concern over the lack of communication.
Earlier this summer, Beshear had issued stronger demands, calling on McConnell to address the public directly about his capacity to serve or consider resigning. Those prior requests also went unanswered, according to the governor.
McConnell’s office has released limited photographs during his absence but has provided no detailed medical updates. The senator’s prolonged recovery has drawn attention to leadership questions within the Republican conference.
Beshear’s remarks come as Kentucky voters and political observers continue to monitor the situation. No timeline for McConnell’s return has been confirmed.
