A 30-year-old Fairfield, California man is facing multiple felony charges after a home invasion incident captured on video spread widely online, according to police and court records.
Authorities identified the suspect as Jason Nichols, who has been charged with first-degree burglary, assault with a deadly weapon, criminal threats, and vandalism stemming from the April 7 incident. An additional charge involving alleged conduct toward a minor was later added following a separate report.
Investigators say Nichols approached the residence and was recorded on a doorbell camera attempting to gain entry while demanding to know the whereabouts of a child inside the home. According to police, he made repeated threats and attempted to force entry by kicking the front door before ultimately entering through a sliding glass door.
At the time of the incident, a woman and child were inside the home and took cover as the situation escalated. The homeowner, who was not initially present, monitored the encounter through a home security system before returning to the residence.
Police said the homeowner armed himself with a shovel and confronted Nichols inside the home, leading to a physical altercation. Both men sustained head injuries during the encounter. Officers arrived shortly afterward and took Nichols into custody without further incident.
Court filings allege Nichols also caused property damage during the break-in, including destruction of the sliding glass door. Prosecutors further state that his actions and threats placed the occupants in fear for their safety.
Authorities later reported that a witness came forward regarding a separate interaction involving Nichols and a child days before the break-in, leading to an additional charge. Details of that incident have not been publicly released.
Nichols appeared in court earlier this week and has not yet entered a plea. He remains in custody at the Solano County Jail, with bail previously set at tens of thousands of dollars. He is scheduled to return to court on April 23 as the case moves forward.
