A southwest Florida man was arrested and charged after allegedly posting a death threat against Rep. Byron Donalds, R-Fla., following President Donald Trump’s endorsement of the congressman’s 2026 gubernatorial bid.
Dominic Ambrosia, 30, of Port Charlotte, was taken into custody last week and charged with intimidation by written or electronic threat to kill or injure, according to Charlotte County court records. Authorities allege Ambrosia responded to Donalds’ X post sharing Trump’s endorsement by writing, “I’m going to kill him! Thanks, Mr. President.”
Donalds, who represents Florida’s 19th Congressional District, had reposted the president’s endorsement message. Law enforcement identified Ambrosia as the account holder, notified the congressman’s security team, and Donalds chose to pursue charges.
Investigators obtained information from X linking the threatening account to Ambrosia through an associated phone number. Additional posts from the account reportedly contained racial slurs directed at Black Americans and strong opposition to Donald's becoming governor.
Ambrosia was living in a travel trailer behind a residence in Port Charlotte. He has a prior criminal history, including an arrest last year for aggravated stalking of a neighbor. He was released from the Pinellas County Jail just over a month ago after serving approximately 300 days.
In addition to the threat charge, Ambrosia was also charged with failure to register as a convicted felon. He remains held without bond in the Charlotte County Jail.
The case underscores rising security concerns for elected officials and political candidates amid increased political polarization and threats nationwide.
