The New York Giants traded star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence II to the Cincinnati Bengals on Saturday night in exchange for the No. 10 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft. The deal, first reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter and NFL Network's Ian Rapoport, gives the Giants the fifth and tenth picks in the first round next Thursday.

Lawrence, 28, had requested a trade earlier this month after contract extension talks with the Giants reached an impasse. The former Clemson standout, selected 17th overall by New York in 2019, earned three consecutive Pro Bowl nods from 2022 to 2024 and was a second-team All-Pro twice. Over seven NFL seasons, he amassed 341 tackles, 30.5 sacks, and 40 tackles for loss in 126 games. His 2025 campaign marked a down year with 30 tackles and just 0.5 sacks in 17 appearances.

Lawrence signed a four-year, $90 million extension with the Giants in May 2024, but the final two years lacked guaranteed money. He sought a new deal with an average annual value in the high $20 million range, comparable to top interior linemen like Chris Jones. The Bengals plan to offer the extension Lawrence desired as part of the straight-up swap.

For the Giants, the trade nets premium draft capital amid a defensive line rebuild. New York now holds two top-10 selections for the second time since 2022. The team returns picks like No. 37 in the second round and others later. Analysts praised the move as an 'A' grade, noting the high value of the tenth pick in a relatively weak draft class.

The Bengals, meanwhile, addressed a porous defense that ranked 31st in yards allowed and 30th in points surrendered last season, contributing to a third straight playoff miss. Cincinnati had bolstered its front with free-agent additions like edge rusher Boye Mafe on a three-year, $60 million deal, defensive tackle Jonathan Allen, and safety Bryan Cook. Lawrence provides an immediate interior presence, though some graded the deal a 'B' given the cost and his recent production dip.

The trade reshapes both teams' approaches to the draft in Detroit next week. The Giants could target blue-chip talents like Ohio State linebacker Sonny Styles or Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love. For Cincinnati, the move signals a win-now push despite surrendering a top pick.
