Representative Ilhan Omar secured the Democratic nomination for Minnesota's 5th Congressional District in Tuesday's primary election. The longtime incumbent defeated several challengers to earn another term on the ballot in the heavily Democratic Minneapolis-centered district.

Unofficial results showed Omar receiving 80.7 percent of the vote, or 122,640 votes. Former federal prosecutor Julie Trang Le received 6.7 percent with 10,201 votes, while Latonya Reeves garnered 6.0 percent with 9,131 votes. Other candidates included Nate Schluter and Abena McKenzie.

Omar has represented the district since 2019 and won reelection in 2024 with 74.3 percent of the general election vote. The 5th District ranks among the most reliably Democratic seats in the country.

The primary took place on August 11. With more than 95 percent of votes counted, major news outlets including CBS News and The Associated Press projected Omar as the winner. She will face Republican nominee John Nagel in November.
