Despite the violence over the holiday weekend, Chicago's overall summer homicide numbers were lower than in previous years. The city recorded 122 murders during June, July and August, which the Sun-Times reported was Chicago's lowest summer total since 1965. The newspaper also reported that last year's Labor Day weekend was deadlier, with nine people killed and 52 wounded.

The latest shootings nevertheless add to the city's ongoing homicide total. The Sun-Times' homicide database reported 294 people killed in Chicago so far this year as of the latest update.
