A Cincinnati man pleaded guilty Tuesday to federal charges for smashing windows at Vice President JD Vance's home and damaging a Secret Service vehicle with a hammer.

William D. DeFoor, 26, entered the plea in U.S. District Court in Cincinnati to two counts: engaging in acts of physical violence against government officials or property and causing willful injury or depredation to property of the United States. Prosecutors said the charges stem from the Jan. 5 incident at Vance's East Walnut Hills residence.

According to court documents, Secret Service agents observed DeFoor running along the front fence of the protected home around midnight. He breached the property line, struck the driver's side window of an unmarked federal law enforcement vehicle three times with a hammer, and then broke multiple large historic glass windows at the front of the residence. The strikes damaged enhanced security assets on the windows, which the government valued at approximately $28,000.

DeFoor ignored commands to stop and drop the hammer before attempting to flee on foot. Agents and Cincinnati police officers detained him at the scene. Vance and his family were not at the home at the time.

Under the plea agreement, DeFoor must pay restitution of about $28,000. He is also prohibited from approaching within 350 yards of Vance, Vance's family, or their residences and from contacting them. Prosecutors agreed to drop a third charge of assaulting, resisting, or impeding federal officers after sentencing.

DeFoor faces up to 10 years in prison on each of the two counts to which he pleaded guilty. A sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled. His attorney has previously described the incident as a mental health matter rather than a political one.

The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Ohio emphasized that acts of violence against political leaders or their property will not be tolerated.
