Rep. Chuck Edwards, R-N.C., announced Wednesday morning that he is withdrawing from his reelection campaign for the state's 11th Congressional District.

Edwards said he will complete his current term, which ends in January. In a statement posted on social media, he cited prayer and reflection as factors in the decision and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve Western North Carolina.

The move follows a House Ethics Committee report released Monday that found substantial reason to believe Edwards violated House rules related to sexual harassment and hostile workplaces. The panel recommended that the House censure Edwards for persistent unprofessional and inappropriate conduct toward two young female staffers, including unwanted advances.

The committee detailed instances of Edwards singling out the aides for special attention, such as skipping votes to assist one staffer with holiday decorations and canceling events to meet another for dinner. The investigation began in May after initial reports of the allegations surfaced.

Republican leaders, including Sen. Ted Budd of North Carolina, privately urged Edwards to exit the race, citing concerns that the ethics findings would make reelection difficult in the competitive district. The House is scheduled to address the censure resolution later this month upon returning from recess.

Edwards has represented the 11th District since 2023. His withdrawal leaves the seat open for other Republican candidates ahead of the November elections.
