Los Angeles City Councilmember Nithya Raman overtook former reality television star Spencer Pratt for second place in the city's mayoral primary on Sunday, narrowing the contest to determine who will face incumbent Mayor Karen Bass in the November runoff.

With 83 percent of the expected vote counted, Bass held a clear lead at 34.7 percent with 250,871 votes. Raman reached 27.1 percent with 196,198 votes, while Pratt stood at 26.7 percent with 193,085 votes, according to the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder.

Raman had trailed Pratt since election night on June 2, when the reality TV personality from "The Hills" held a stronger position among early returns. Subsequent batches of mail ballots, which tend to favor Democratic candidates, steadily closed the gap over the following days. Raman cut Pratt's lead nearly in half by Friday and pulled ahead by a few thousand votes in the Sunday update.

The nonpartisan primary uses a top-two system, sending the two highest vote-getters to the general election on November 3. No projection has been made yet on the final matchup against Bass, as hundreds of thousands of ballots remain to be counted.

Raman, a progressive Democrat representing the 4th District, has gained ground consistently as more votes were tallied. Pratt, a registered Republican who received some MAGA-aligned support during the campaign, led among the initial tallies but saw his advantage erode with later counts.

Bass, seeking reelection, maintained her position as the frontrunner throughout the count. The race drew attention for the unusual matchup involving a sitting councilmember, an entertainment personality, and the incumbent mayor amid ongoing city challenges including homelessness and public safety.

Additional results are expected in the coming days, which could solidify or shift the current standings before any runoff is confirmed.
