A U.S. Secret Service officer was arrested early Monday on an indecent exposure charge after allegedly masturbating in the hallway of a Miami hotel, hours after working security for President Donald Trump at a golf tournament.
John Andrew Spillman, 33, of Marble Falls, Texas, faced the misdemeanor charge following the incident late Sunday at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Miami Airport & Convention Center. According to the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office arrest report, Spillman followed hotel guests from the lobby to the sixth floor. The guests entered their room out of fear for their lives and observed Spillman masturbating next to their door. Hotel security arrived and found him with his pants lowered, engaging in the act.
Deputies arrested Spillman without incident around 12:06 a.m. Monday, and booked him into Miami-Dade County Jail. He posted a $1,000 bond after a court appearance that day and was released. A follow-up hearing is scheduled for May 27.
Spillman had worked earlier Sunday on an exterior security screening detail for Trump's visit to the PGA Tour's Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral Miami. The president watched the final round from a tent near the 18th hole. Spillman, who joined the Secret Service in 2019 and is based in Washington, D.C., was off duty at the time of the hotel incident.
The U.S. Secret Service placed Spillman on administrative leave pending the criminal case and an internal investigation. Richard Macauley, chief of the Secret Service's Uniformed Division, said: "The alleged conduct is unacceptable and stands in stark contrast to the professionalism and integrity that I demand of our personnel. This agency takes these matters with the utmost seriousness; consequently, the individual has been placed on administrative leave pending the results of this criminal matter and a complete and thorough internal investigation."
Spillman's public defender did not immediately respond to requests for comment. A relative declined to comment when reached by phone. No prior criminal record for Spillman was mentioned in available reports.
The arrest comes amid heightened scrutiny of Secret Service operations, though agency officials emphasized the officer's off-duty status.
