The Trump administration announced Monday that it is pausing construction on a $1.7 billion border security project at Big Bend National Park in Texas.

The Department of Homeland Security had planned to build vehicle barriers, patrol roads, lighting, and detection technology along the border area within the park.

The project has drawn opposition from lawmakers in both parties. Officials cited the need to address those concerns before proceeding.

Construction work on the barriers and related infrastructure will stop immediately, according to the administration statement. No timeline was given for when or if work might resume.

Big Bend National Park spans a remote stretch of the U.S.-Mexico border in West Texas. The area has seen increased enforcement activity in recent years.

The pause comes as the administration continues broader efforts to strengthen border security measures nationwide.
