Interim U.S. Sen. Darline Graham delivered a strong showing in her first major debate as she seeks the Republican nomination for South Carolina's Senate seat in a special primary.

Graham, the sister of the late Sen. Lindsey Graham, was appointed by Gov. Henry McMaster to complete her brother's term following his death. President Donald Trump endorsed her for the full six-year term and urged her to run, calling her a winner who would honor her brother's legacy.

In the Aug. 3 debate hosted by Gray Media, Graham highlighted her alignment with Trump's agenda, her willingness to serve at the president's request, and her focus on South Carolina priorities. She stressed themes of hard work and commitment despite entering politics later in life after her brother's passing.

Observers noted her poise on the stage against more experienced candidates including Reps. Ralph Norman and Russell Fry and former Gov. Mark Sanford. Graham addressed foreign policy with a hawkish tone consistent with her brother's views, advocating peace through strength and strong support for Israel.

Trump has continued to back Graham publicly in the days since the debate. The special Republican primary is scheduled for Aug. 11, with the winner advancing to the November general election to fill the remainder of the term.
