President Donald Trump on Saturday night commended the rapid response of federal agents after an armed suspect attempted to breach a security checkpoint near the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner at the Washington Hilton.
President Trump said the suspect approached the checkpoint carrying multiple weapons and was stopped by members of the United States Secret Service before reaching the main event area, where more than 2,000 attendees had gathered.
“A man charged a security checkpoint armed with multiple weapons, and he was taken down by some very brave members of Secret Service,” Trump said following the incident, describing the response as immediate and decisive.
According to the president, one Secret Service agent was shot during the confrontation but was protected by a bulletproof vest and is expected to recover. Trump said he spoke directly with the agent afterward and described the individual as being in stable condition.
Law enforcement officials confirmed the suspect was stopped outside the main ballroom area, preventing further danger inside the venue. Witnesses reported hearing multiple loud pops, prompting guests to take cover as security teams secured the building and evacuated key officials.
President Trump said he has ordered the release of video footage from the incident, citing a desire for transparency and to highlight what he characterized as the professionalism of responding officers.
He also used the moment to call for expanded security measures at major federal venues, including enhanced protective infrastructure and upgraded defenses against emerging threats.
The annual dinner, often attended by senior government officials, journalists, and public figures, was disrupted by the incident but may be rescheduled. Trump said he intends to hold the event within the next 30 days.
The president described the atmosphere inside the ballroom during the evacuation as unusually unified, noting that attendees from across the political spectrum responded together under pressure.
Authorities continue to investigate the suspect and the circumstances surrounding the attempted breach.
