President Donald Trump gave New Mexico a tongue-in-cheek makeover Sunday, posting an edited map of the state with the word “Mexico” crossed out in bright red and replaced with “America.”

The alteration would turn the state’s name into “New America,” though Trump did not provide any explanation or indicate that he was proposing an actual name change. The post appeared to be a lighthearted social-media message rather than a formal policy announcement.

New Mexico has carried its current name for centuries, dating back to the Spanish colonial period. The state borders Mexico to the south and remains one of the states most closely associated with the U.S.-Mexico border.

The post comes shortly after Trump has made other changes involving geographic names. His administration recently moved to use “Lake America” as the U.S. federal name for Lake Ontario, following earlier action changing the federal name “Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of America.”

The New Mexico image quickly attracted attention online, with users joking about the proposed “New America” name.

There has been no formal proposal to rename New Mexico, and the state remains officially known as New Mexico. Trump’s post offered no indication that any actual change to the state’s name is being considered.
