Uber announced new safety features for its teen accounts allowing parents to view live video streams of their children's rides using drivers' front-facing phone cameras.

The optional livestream feature gives parents or guardians a real-time view from the driver's selfie camera once a teen trip begins. Parents receive a push notification if the stream is available and can tap to watch an encrypted feed. Both the teen and driver are notified when a parent tunes in, and the stream automatically ends when the ride concludes.

The feature builds on Uber's existing teen accounts program, which launched in 2023 and includes PIN verification, live GPS tracking, and audio recording. It targets riders ages 13 to 17 and matches them with highly rated, experienced drivers eligible for underage passengers.

Live video is currently available in nine U.S. markets, including Atlanta, Phoenix, Orlando, Raleigh-Durham, Portland, San Antonio, Cleveland, Rhode Island, and El Paso. The company plans a nationwide rollout over the coming weeks.

Uber said the update adds peace of mind for families while incorporating privacy protections. No one, including the driver or teen, can access the video after the trip ends, though the company may retain encrypted recordings for safety investigations if needed. Drivers must opt in to enable the feature.

Some reports also noted expanded family profile tools in select markets that let parents request and pay for rides while monitoring trips.

Uber's director of product management Ashu Manohar stated that teen accounts originated from parent feedback and now serve families in more than 50 countries, completing tens of millions of trips annually.

The rollout comes as ride-hailing services continue to emphasize safety tools amid broader industry focus on rider protection.
