Vivek Ramaswamy captured the Republican nomination for Ohio governor on Tuesday, solidifying his path to the November general election against Democrat Amy Acton.
The Cincinnati native and founder of Roivant Sciences dominated the primary field, leveraging endorsements from former President Donald Trump and the Ohio Republican Party. Polling had shown Ramaswamy leading by wide margins, with a late April Bowling Green State University survey giving him 76% support among likely voters. Prediction markets like Polymarket reflected near-certainty of his victory, pricing him at over 99% probability as polls closed at 7:30 p.m. EDT.
Ramaswamy's sole remaining challenger was automotive entrepreneur Casey Putsch, whose campaign struggled to gain traction despite positioning as a grassroots alternative. Earlier contenders like Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost and business owner Heather Hill dropped out or were disqualified, clearing the path for Ramaswamy after the state GOP's early endorsement in May 2025.
Incumbent Republican Gov. Mike DeWine is term-limited, opening the seat after his two terms marked by pandemic management and economic recovery efforts. Ramaswamy, who ran a competitive campaign for the 2024 GOP presidential nomination, pitched himself as an outsider ready to shake up state government with his business acumen and focus on reducing bureaucracy.
His running mate, state Senate President Rob McColley, bolsters the ticket with legislative experience. On the Democratic side, former Ohio health director Amy Acton secured the nomination uncontested.
Ohio has not elected a Democratic governor since 2006, and Republicans hold a registration edge. Ramaswamy quickly pivoted to the general election, vowing to prioritize economic growth, school choice, and border security in the battleground state. With U.S. Senate races also on the ballot, including a contest for J.D. Vance's seat, the fall campaign promises high stakes nationally.
Early analyses suggest Ramaswamy's national profile and fundraising prowess position him strongly for November 3.
