Walmart has eliminated most self-checkout lanes at its South Philadelphia store, transitioning fully to cashier-led checkouts. The change took effect in March at the location on South Christopher Columbus Boulevard, one of five Walmart stores in the city.
A Walmart spokesperson explained the decision, stating, “These changes are guided by feedback from associates and customers, local shopping patterns, and the needs of the business in each community.” The move aims to “improve the checkout experience and enable associates to provide more personalized customer service.” A few self-checkout units remain available exclusively for Spark drivers, Walmart's independent delivery contractors.
This adjustment aligns with Walmart's broader store renovation efforts. The company plans to remodel more than 650 Supercenters and Neighborhood Markets nationwide in 2026, including about 32 locations in Pennsylvania. Last year, Walmart completed updates at 650 stores across 47 states and Puerto Rico, with 26 in Pennsylvania. Remodels feature wider aisles, updated layouts, expanded pickup and delivery options, refreshed pharmacies, and new digital tools like Walmart Pay and Scan & Go for faster transactions.
The Philadelphia store's shift reflects a store-by-store approach rather than a companywide policy. Walmart continues to evaluate self-checkout usage based on local conditions. This comes amid a retail industry trend where chains like Target, Dollar General, Five Below, and Costco have scaled back or removed self-service kiosks. Some retailers, including Philadelphia-based Five Below, have cited theft prevention as a factor, while others emphasize better service.
Customer preferences play a role in these decisions. A 2024 study co-authored by Drexel University marketing professor Yanliu Huang found that self-checkout can reduce customer loyalty and satisfaction, as shoppers often expect personal service in stores. However, some prefer machines for small purchases to skip lines with full carts.
Walmart's investments underscore its focus on enhancing the in-store experience. The 2026 remodels will create construction and retail jobs while introducing features like express delivery within an hour and free pharmacy shipping for Walmart+ members. These updates build on prior commitments to modernize stores and expand services.
