At least 28 people were shot over the weekend in Chicago, including one fatality, as gun violence continues to impact neighborhoods across the city.
The deadly incident occurred late Saturday night in the 8000 block of South Morgan Street, where a dispute between two groups escalated into gunfire. A 25-year-old woman was shot multiple times and later died after being transported to a hospital. A 36-year-old man was also wounded in the same incident and listed in fair condition.
Hours later, in the early morning on Sunday, another shooting left three men injured when a woman opened fire on a group. The victims, ages 31, 37, and 38, were transported for medical treatment, with the 37-year-old reported in critical condition.
The weekend violence adds to a broader trend in Chicago, where homicides have risen slightly in early 2026. The city recorded 105 killings through the first week of April, compared to 98 during the same timeframe last year, according to local reports.
The surge in shootings comes as Mayor Brandon Johnson continues to advocate for gun control measures, while critics argue existing restrictions have not curbed violent crime.
Illinois maintains strict firearm regulations, requiring multiple steps for legal ownership and additional permitting to carry a weapon in public. Despite those measures, incidents of gun violence remain a persistent challenge in parts of the city.
Authorities continue to investigate the weekend shootings as officials face ongoing pressure to address public safety concerns and reduce violent crime.
