Former California State Controller Betty Yee announced Tuesday that she is endorsing Tom Steyer in the state’s gubernatorial race, a day after ending her own campaign.
Yee revealed her support in a video released by Steyer’s campaign, citing his policy proposals and ability to translate progressive priorities into what she described as actionable results. She pointed to his work on environmental issues and efforts to engage younger voters as key factors in her decision.
Steyer welcomed the endorsement, saying Yee’s experience in state government would be valuable moving forward and emphasizing the importance of practical governance in addressing California’s challenges.
Yee exited the race Monday after struggling to gain traction in polling and fundraising in a crowded field. Her departure followed the earlier withdrawal of former Rep. Eric Swalwell, who has denied multiple allegations of sexual misconduct.
The endorsement comes as the California governor’s race remains competitive ahead of the June primary. Recent polling shows Republican candidates Steve Hilton and Chad Bianco leading the field, with Steyer and other Democratic contenders trailing behind.
Among Democrats, Steyer has been competing with figures such as Xavier Becerra and Katie Porter, both of whom have maintained support within the party base. Yee previously criticized Porter’s temperament during the campaign, underscoring divisions within the Democratic field.
Steyer has also secured endorsements from several California lawmakers and organizations, including the California Teachers Association, which cited his positions on education funding and economic policy.
California’s top-two primary system advances the two highest vote-getters to the general election regardless of party, leaving Democrats working to consolidate support in a race where Republicans have shown early strength in polling.
