The Atlanta Braves rallied for a 5-3 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, taking Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series after Austin Riley delivered a go-ahead three-run homer in the eighth inning.

The Braves overcame a late Philadelphia lead to open the postseason with a dramatic victory at Truist Park, moving one win away from advancing to the National League Division Series.

Philadelphia struck first in the opening inning when Alec Bohm drove in a run with a two-out double against Atlanta starter Chris Sale. The Braves answered in the second when Mike Yastrzemski delivered an RBI single to tie the game.

Atlanta took its first lead in the fifth inning. Ozzie Albies tripled to center, with the ball bouncing off the wrist of Phillies center fielder Derek Hill as he attempted to make a play, allowing the Braves to move ahead 2-1.

Sale kept Philadelphia in check for much of the afternoon before the Phillies finally broke through in the seventh. J.T. Realmuto delivered a two-run triple with two outs, putting Philadelphia back in front 3-2 and leaving Atlanta facing a late deficit.

Phillies manager Don Mattingly turned to closer Jhoan Duran with the lead in the bottom of the seventh, but the move ultimately backfired.

With two runners on base in the eighth, Riley stepped to the plate against Duran and launched a three-run home run to give Atlanta a 5-3 advantage. The blast completely changed the game and sent the Truist Park crowd into a frenzy.

The Braves then shut down Philadelphia in the ninth inning to secure the victory and take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three series. Atlanta needs only one more win to eliminate the Phillies and advance.

The victory was especially significant after the Braves dominated the regular-season series against Philadelphia, winning nine of their 13 meetings. The Phillies had also eliminated Atlanta from the playoffs in the National League Division Series in both 2022 and 2023.

Game 2 is scheduled for Wednesday in Atlanta, with the Phillies facing elimination while the Braves will have an opportunity to close out the series on their home field.
