Christa Pike, the Tennessee death row inmate who survived a failed lethal injection last month, was released from the hospital and returned to prison on Saturday.
Pike, 50, arrived back at the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center in Nashville, where she has been housed for more than 30 years. Her attorneys confirmed the transfer in a statement and noted that she will continue receiving medical care at the facility.
"She is grateful to the first responders and her medical team for their care in these extraordinary circumstances," the legal team said. "She is continuing to receive medical care at the prison, and we will continue to track her recovery."
Pike was convicted in 1996 for the 1995 torture and murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer in Knoxville. She received the death penalty for her role in the crime committed while both women were teenagers in a job training program.
Tennessee attempted to execute Pike by lethal injection on September 30 at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution. She received two doses of pentobarbital but survived the procedure. Authorities transported her to a Nashville hospital unconscious and in critical condition with severe injuries to her arms.
Initial reports indicated Pike was brain-dead and on life support. She later regained consciousness, began speaking, and showed significant physical improvement. By early this week, attorneys reported she was walking with assistance, eating a regular diet, and regaining movement in her arms.
A Tennessee judge ordered state officials this week to preserve all evidence related to the failed execution, including medical records and equipment. Governor Bill Lee directed a comprehensive review of the state's execution protocols and postponed the one remaining execution scheduled for this year.
Pike's case has drawn renewed attention to the challenges states face in carrying out capital punishment. She remains at the women's prison under continued medical supervision as her recovery progresses.
