The FBI has arrested and charged a 17-year-old from McKinney, Texas, accused of plotting to assassinate Rep. Keith Self, R-Texas, and carry out a separate terrorist attack on behalf of the Islamic State terrorist group.
Federal law enforcement sources told WFAA that the teenager was arrested October 5 after acquiring a firearm. Investigators had reportedly been monitoring the suspect because of concerns that he had recently become radicalized.
The alleged assassination plot targeted an event scheduled for Saturday, according to the report. Authorities have not publicly identified the teenager, who remains in federal custody.
Self, who represents Texas' 3rd Congressional District, said he and his family were safe and thanked federal authorities for stopping the alleged threat.
“I am grateful to the FBI and law enforcement for stopping this threat,” Self wrote on X. “My family and I are safe, and I remain focused on serving the people of Texas' 3rd District.”
The congressman, a 25-year military veteran, said the alleged plot would not deter his efforts to confront radical Islamic extremism.
“Preserving our constitutional republic from radical Islam means accepting the costs that come with it, name-calling, threats, and worse,” Self wrote. He added that his military service had reinforced his belief that defending American freedom was worth the sacrifice.
“This only strengthens my resolve. I will not back down,” he said.

Members of Congress receive a security stipend that can be used for personal protection. Self said he was confident in his security team.
Self has been an outspoken critic of Sharia law and radical Islamic extremism. In December, he co-founded the Sharia-Free America Caucus with Rep. Chip Roy, R-Texas, to oppose the influence of Sharia law in the United States.
Last month, Self introduced a nonbinding House resolution condemning Sharia law and opposing its implementation in America. He has also supported legislation targeting Islamic extremism.
Asked whether his opposition to radical Islam prompted the alleged assassination plot, Self said he could not confirm a direct connection.
“If it's ISIS related, you kind of have to believe that,” he told WFAA. “I can't prove that. I don't know that for sure.”
The alleged plot comes amid broader concerns about political violence in the United States, including assassination attempts against President Donald Trump and the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
Self's Democratic opponent, Evan Hunt, condemned the alleged threat and emphasized that political violence should be rejected regardless of party affiliation.
“There is no place for violence in our politics,” Hunt said. “No political disagreement ever justifies threatening someone's life.”
Hunt also praised law enforcement for working to protect public officials and urged Americans to resolve political differences through debate and elections.
Self is seeking a third term representing the North Texas congressional district. The allegations against the teenager have not been adjudicated in court.
