Elon Musk is considering an investment of between $50 million and $200 million in Texas to bolster Attorney General Ken Paxton's campaign for the U.S. Senate.
Musk's America PAC has already begun spending on the race. Federal Election Commission filings show the group has directed more than $1.6 million to support Paxton against Democratic state Rep. James Talarico, with the bulk going toward digital media and printing costs for mailers and signs.
Paxton secured the Republican nomination after defeating longtime Sen. John Cornyn in the May primary runoff. He now faces Talarico in the November midterm election for the seat. Fundraising has favored the Democrat, who reported roughly $68 million to Paxton's $9 million as of recent filings.
The Texas race carries significant weight for Senate control. Republicans have not lost a statewide contest in the state in more than three decades. Outside spending from groups aligned with President Donald Trump has also increased, including a $10 million commitment from the MAGA Inc. super PAC for ads promoting Paxton.
Musk's broader midterm strategy includes commitments to multiple competitive Senate contests nationwide. Reports indicate his PAC received authorization last year to spend at least $100 million this cycle, with Texas identified as a priority due to its potential impact on the chamber's balance.
Paxton has released policy proposals on issues such as regulating data centers to address concerns over power and water usage. The contest remains competitive according to recent polling.
Additional disclosures show America PAC expenditures in Texas focused on direct voter outreach materials in August.
