The next “Fast & Furious” movie is reportedly facing significant uncertainty, with “Fast Forever” said to have no completed screenplay, no confirmed director, and potentially no viable March 2028 release date.
According to The InSneider, the film, which is expected to serve as the franchise’s final chapter, does not currently have a finished script and reportedly never had one in completed form. The development comes despite previous public comments from star and producer Vin Diesel suggesting the project was much further along.
Diesel previously claimed that he had read the screenplay and became emotional while discussing it. He has also repeatedly used social media to tease the movie’s development, including a video suggesting production was beginning and other posts hinting at the possible use of an AI-generated appearance by the late Paul Walker.
The reported lack of a script raises questions about several of Diesel’s previous announcements. Cody Walker, Paul Walker’s brother, has said that Universal had not even formally greenlit “Fast Forever” when Diesel announced the movie onstage.
Universal is also reportedly looking for a new director. Louis Leterrier, who directed “Fast X,” does not appear likely to return. Leterrier has previously acknowledged that he had not seen a finished script while waiting for the project to move forward and has remained occupied with other work.
Diesel has meanwhile hinted that he could potentially direct the next installment himself, adding another layer of uncertainty surrounding the film’s creative direction.
The production timeline is another problem. The movie is currently associated with a March 2028 release date, but production is now reportedly being targeted for early 2028. If that schedule holds, the film would have little practical chance of making its existing release date, making another delay increasingly likely.
The project is expected to begin transitioning the franchise away from Diesel’s Dom Toretto and toward a younger generation of characters. Charles Melton has emerged as one name reportedly being discussed by Universal executives, although there is no formal offer because a completed script does not exist.
Melton has built a profile beyond his early work on “Riverdale,” earning critical attention for his performance in Todd Haynes’ “May December.” He has since appeared in projects including Alex Garland’s “Warfare” and the second season of “Beef,” while also taking roles in several upcoming productions.
For now, the next installment remains in a highly unsettled state. Despite years of promotion surrounding the continuation of the franchise, “Fast Forever” reportedly lacks the basic elements needed to move into production, leaving its script, director, production schedule, and release date unresolved.
