Federal authorities executed a search warrant Tuesday morning at a Beverly Hills mansion connected to Stephen Cloobeck, a billionaire developer and former donor to former Democrat Representative Eric Swalwell. The property, located on North Roxbury Drive, appears in Cloobeck’s California business filings. Agents from the FBI’s Los Angeles field office carried out the operation as part of an ongoing criminal investigation. A spokesperson confirmed the execution of the federal search warrant but noted that no arrests were planned at the time and that the supporting affidavit remains under seal.
Cloobeck built his wealth in the timeshare industry and had backed Swalwell’s campaign for California governor with donations exceeding $1 million. He severed ties following the emergence of sexual misconduct allegations against the Democrat. Swalwell stepped down from his congressional seat in April and ended his gubernatorial bid after multiple women came forward with claims, including sexual assault accusations from a former staffer and reports of other inappropriate conduct. Swalwell has maintained his innocence throughout.
This raid represents the most recent action in the federal inquiry. Earlier, in August, agents searched Swalwell’s Washington, D.C., residence, taking possession of an iPhone and a MacBook Pro. That search was conducted under a civil rights investigation linked to the same set of allegations. The former congressman continues to deny any wrongdoing.
Cloobeck had invited Swalwell to the Beverly Hills home during the campaign and permitted its use for various political gatherings. He later issued public statements distancing himself from Swalwell, explaining that he could no longer offer support. The Justice Department characterized the Tuesday search as part of an active criminal matter without releasing further specifics. The probe originated from allegations reported in the spring that triggered both state and federal reviews of Swalwell’s actions.
Separately, Cloobeck encountered his own legal challenges earlier in the year when he faced charges related to efforts to dissuade witnesses in a case involving his fiancée. The sealed nature of the warrant affidavit limits public details, but the operation comes amid ongoing federal scrutiny of individuals tied to the former congressman.
