The FBI and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) issued an alert Friday warning that hackers could attempt to disrupt the upcoming midterm elections through fraudulent text messages and emails designed to steal passwords and other sensitive information.

The agencies cautioned that election officials, political candidates and their organizations are particularly attractive targets for cybercriminals seeking access to sensitive accounts and information.

The alert warned that “election officials, candidates, and their political organizations are attractive targets to malicious cybercriminals.”

Officials also highlighted how Super Intelligence, the Trump administration’s preferred term for artificial intelligence, is giving hackers new ways to refine phishing messages. These fraudulent emails and text messages can be made more convincing by mimicking legitimate communications, increasing the risk that recipients will click malicious links or disclose confidential information.

The warning comes as election officials prepare for next month’s midterm elections, when cybercriminals may seek to exploit political activity and public attention to compromise accounts or disrupt election-related operations. The agencies are urging officials and members of the public to remain vigilant, scrutinize unexpected messages and protect their login credentials and other sensitive data.
